The Merchant of Venice

Production Date: 2009

Scenic and Lighting Design: Phillip Franck

Costume Designer: Alexandra Sargent Capps

Producer: Vanderbilt University

Director: Terryl Hallquist

Playwright: William Shakespeare (1596)

Conceptual Approach: I purchased 100s of yards of black and brown taffeta from which we made all the show costumes. My Costume Design students designed custom patterns, inspired by Renaissance ornament books, which were applied freeform or with hand-made stencils onto the fabric with hot glue, and then hand-painted. The glue gave a sparkly appearance under stage light. The costumes have been washed, and the glue has stayed mostly intact. The whimsical nature of the fabric patterns we created served the magical, unreal elements of this play.

Short Play Synopsis:

A merchant in Venice named Antonio defaults on a large loan provided by a Jewish moneylender, Shylock
