Lucy McGuire

Lucy is charismatic and brings a smile to the face of everyone with whom she comes into contact. She has a short arm without fingers. Watching her do cartwheels through the open floor of the Wond’ry was just fun to watch. Students who helped me alter her clothes and received adorable thank you notes from Lucy became immediately interested in going into adaptive fashion after college.

Lucy came to the Wond’ry to work with a team of engineers to design a hand extension that holds a bow so that she can play violin. In the Fiber Arts Lab, we: took-up the sleeve on her short arm on a variety of jackets and garments so that Lucy’s garments fit her better; adapted existing ski mittens to fit her hand without fingers; and worked on making a fitted “short-arm protector” lined with silicone elastic to help it stay on her lower arm and hand.

Working with Lucy and her parents has been educational, joyful, and rewarding.
